At least 30 people were killed and dozens more wounded late Saturday in an attack possibly carried out by a suicide bomber on a wedding party in the Turkish city of Gaziantep near the Syrian border, officials said, according to AFP.

Gaziantep governor Ali Yerlikaya said in a statement that 30 people had been killed and 94 wounded in "an abhorrent terror bomb attack on a wedding".

Mehmet Erdogan, a ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) lawmaker for Gaziantep said it was not clear who was responsible for the explosion but there was a "high possibility" it was a suicide attack.

The lawmaker added that it was the type of attack that could have been launched by the Islamic State (ISIS) group or the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

A major city lying just 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of the Syrian border, Gaziantep has become a hub for Syrians fleeing the civil war in their country.

Mahmut Togrul, a member of parliament for Gaziantep from Turkey's pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party, told Reuters the wedding that was attacked was a Kurdish wedding. ISIS has been blamed for suicide bombings on Kurdish gatherings in the past.

Turkey faces multiple security threats from ISIS at home and across the border with neighboring Syria as well as from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Three suspected ISIS suicide bombers killed 44 people at Istanbul's main airport in June.
